Gastrointestinal Diet
Author: Dr. John Drew LaurusonisA Gastrointestinal Diet for People suffering from stomach flu, food poisoning and other stomach related problems.
For the remainder of the first day of illness take only small amounts of clear liquids such as water, Gatorade, Kool-Aid, soup broth, weak dilute non caffeinated coffee or tea, diluted juices, Sprite or non-caffeinated Coca-Cola (let stand at room temperature and stir out the fizz) as tolerated. Jell-O and ice pops are considered clear liquids. If the pain or symptoms get worse or new symptoms develop; immediately see the doctor.
The following morning for breakfast, eat toast, crackers and clear liquids. If there is less stomach upset and obvious improvements, for the remainder of the day, eat skinless roasted or broiled chicken or turkey, rice, applesauce, and/or bananas.
If you feel the same or are worse in any way call and see the doctor. Eat small amounts frequently. DO NOT eat a big meal. This can make your symtoms return again. If you feel better by the next day, slowly resume a regular diet over the following 2 days. Limit your portions and eat much smaller meals. Again, eating larger meals even if you feel better, your symtoms can return again and with a vengence.
If there is no improvement, new symptoms, fever or you are worse in any way, please call us at (770) 232-1101 if you have any questions or concerns. Immediately go to the Emergency Room. Doctors Medical Center is open 7 Days A Week (Closed Christmas) From 9:30AM through 9:30PM.
